Specialist Paediatrician, Fixed term

About the role

Nelson Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Paediatrician to join our dedicated team to provide leave cover for 12 months. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a collaborative environment, serving a diverse and vibrant community in the stunning Nelson Tasman region.

As a Paediatrician, you will provide high-quality care to children and adolescents, working across both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role provides an opportunity to practice broad-spectrum paediatrics in a supportive and well-resourced environment.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Paediatrics Department at Nelson Hospital is a secondary-level service with strong links to tertiary services across New Zealand. The team includes a dedicated group of 6 other paediatricians, experienced paediatric nursing staff, and Allied health professionals (dietitians, speech-language therapists, and physiotherapists). Our facilities include a 10-bed inpatient paediatric ward, level 2 Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) with the capacity to provide care for neonates from 32 weeks’ gestation, and comprehensive outpatient clinics for a range of conditions.

The service is committed to delivering family-centred care, focusing on improving health outcomes and fostering strong relationships within the community.

About you:

The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver quality services to improve health of neonates up to early adolescence in the Nelson region.
  • Join a supportive multidisciplinary team making a positive difference through a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour, and respect across disciplines.
  • Participate in the 1:7 on-call roster with 6.5 call back hours contributing an equal share to shifts to cover general paediatrics, SCBU, and acute and inpatients.
  • Work 1:7 weeks full time (40 hours Monday-Friday) and remaining 6 weeks to be agreed to complete employed FTE undertaking outpatient clinics and procedures.
  • Supervise and participate in teaching of junior medical workforce.

Skills and experience

  • Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Paediatrics with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Hold current accredited Advanced Paediatric Life Support, or equivalent.
  • Have General Paediatrics experience and knowledge of the unique demands in a provincial hospital including Neonatology, Paediatric Oncology, and special interest in child behaviour, development, and protection.
  • Preferably be qualified to join the Paediatric MEDSAC team.
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
