Ngā mōhiohio e pā ana ki tēnei mahi (About this position)
The Older Persons’ Mental Health Inpatient Unit, at Alexandra Hospital in Richmond, provides psychiatric and geriatric care for the older members of our community. We aspire to provide high quality inpatient care to patients with acute mental health needs and/or complex age related health conditions. We work in partnership with our patients, their families, the clinical team and community carers and supports to achieve the best possible health outcome for the patient.
As a Mental Health Assistant your role is to work with the team to provide basic nursing care under the supervision and direction of Registered Nurses.
The full-time equivalent salary for this role is $48,368 - $60,610 (Steps 1 to 5) of the current Mental Health & Public Health Nursing MECA based on relevant qualifications and experience. Penal rates and shift allowances are in addition to this.
The casual position will be covering staff leave and periods of peak service demand, working on an as required basis. This includes morning, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends and school holidays. Please note that there are no guarantee minimum hours of employment for casual employees. However, the more available you are, the more shifts you will be offered.
The permanent position will be working an average of 60 hours a fortnight on a ‘3 on, 3 off’ rotating roster. Preference given to applicants who can work mornings, afternoons and nights. Applicants need to be available for weekends and school holidays. There will be the opportunity to work additional shifts.

We are looking for people with excellent communication skills, who have experience in older persons’ health care and an affinity with the elderly. It is equally important that you are able to work in a flexible and methodical manner, demonstrate honesty and reliability and use appropriate initiative.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
Essential
- Year 11 NCEA level 1 English (or equivalent)
- Year 11 NCEA level 1 Maths (or equivalent)
- NZQA Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing - Health Assistance Strand (or equivalent) and if not previously attained needs to be completed within two years of commencement.
Te Whatu Ora staff are required to have completed their primary course of two NZ approved COVID-19 vaccinations.
