Hospital Cleaners and Orderlies – Household Services (Nelson Or Wairau Hospital) 2026

About the Role

As a Household Staff member, you play a vital role in the day‑to‑day running of the hospital. Your work helps ensure a clean, hygienic, and safe environment where patients can recover with confidence, families can visit in comfort, and staff can carry out their work effectively and safely.

As an Orderly, you will provide patient care by safely moving patients and items around the hospital in a courteous, professional and well-presented manner.

Types of duties are - but not limited to:

  • Safely transporting patients between wards, departments, and treatment areas
  • Assisting with patient movement using wheelchairs, stretchers, and hospital beds

Escorting patients, visitors, and staff as required

  • Supporting nursing and clinical staff with non‑clinical tasks
  • Delivering and collecting equipment, supplies, specimens, and documentation

As a Household Cleaner, you will  help the hospital run smoothly by providing an efficient cleaning service for the patients and staff .

Types of duties are - but not limited to:

  • Offering morning and afternoon tea (drinks and snacks);
  • Collecting meal trays from patients after each meal;
  • Mopping the floors using specific equipment which training is provided to use;
  • Cleaning offices, bathrooms and ward rooms;

With either role, your presence will contribute to the effective day-to-day operations within its department.

We have a variety of positions available working a range of shifts and hours including nights and weekends. 

  • Your hourly rate will be between $29.23 to $31.95 an hour dependent upon skills and experience.
  • In addition to hourly rates, we pay penal rates for evening (after 8.00PM) and weekend work, and public holidays worked.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Household team of nearly 88 value teamwork and are committed to supporting the best possible health outcomes for our patients.

Our main location is Nelson but we are spread across the region and service all parts of the community. We have Household services based at Wairau Hospital and Alexandra Hospital also.

About you

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work; someone who can create a positive impression on patients, families and staff within the hospitals.

You will be suited to a Household role if you have great customer service skills and a passion for seeing how the hospital ticks. No experience is required.

To be successful in both the Hospital  Cleaner and Orderlies roles, you will:   

  • Have a positive can-do attitude and apply this to everyday working tasks;
  • Be reliable and trustworthy;
  • Be a supportive team player who has the willingness to help each other out;
  •  Have a customer focused approach where patients and customers are being greeted in a friendly way;
  • Have the willingness to learn and be able to take on positive constructive feedback.

Full training will be provided.

Please note: To be successful in the Orderly roles, you must:   

  • Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time;
  • Be physically fit and active with knowledge of heaving lifting techniques;
  • Have a clean driver’s licence (essential).
