About the Role

As a Non-Training  Surgical Registrar, you will provide cover for General Surgery, Vascular, Urology, and ENT when on after hours. This role is dynamic, allowing exposure to a variety of surgical sub-specialties, ensuring a broad and varied clinical experience.

This non-training position provides an excellent opportunity for Registrars seeking to gain experience across multiple surgical specialties, in a dynamic and collegial team environment. We are committed to accommodating applicants' preferences wherever possible to support career aspiration and sub-specialty interests. There are six NT General Surgical Roles, two Urology, one Vascular and one ENT role. With 2 fulltime positions on the roster leave is covered internally with Run category B hours.

You will work as a base between 8.00AM to 4.30PM Monday to Friday. Extra hours are paid for within the contract to allow for days to extend to cover clinical sessions. Long days from 4.00PM to10.30PM, and Nights from 10.00PM to 8.30AM. Weekend days from 8:00AM to 10:30PM; weekend nights from 10.00PM to 8.30AM for both Saturday and Sunday.

Night shifts will be Monday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Surgical Departments at Nelson Hospital provide comprehensive surgical services to the Nelson Marlborough region. The departments covers a wide range of elective and acute surgical procedures. Key features of the service include fully equipped operating theatres, endoscopy suites, and advanced diagnostic resources; a collegial team of consultants, registrars, and house officers; and opportunities to gain experience across a broad spectrum of surgical conditions and procedures.

About you

As an on-training  Surgical Registrar, you will: 

  • Provide patient care under consultant supervision, including in theatres, wards, clinics, and emergency settings;
  • Participate in the acute on-call roster, including nights and weekends;
  • Collaborate across surgical teams to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care;
  • Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and General scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand;
  • Have PGY3 and above including prior surgical experience;
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team;
  • Have a commitment to patient-centred care and professional development;
  • Obtain ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement).

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in New Zealand or hold a valid NZ visa at the time of applying.
