About the Role

These positions form part of our exciting Emergency Department (ED) expansion, which will enhance our capacity, improve patient flow, and provide state-of-the-art facilities for both staff and patients.

As a key member of our Emergency Medicine team, you will play an essential role in providing comprehensive emergency care to patients across the Nelson Tasman region. The department offers a broad range of emergency presentations, giving you the opportunity to practise the full scope of emergency medicine in a collegial and well-supported environment.

You will participate in rostered shift work, including weekends and nights, as part of a well-structured team. You will also contribute to the supervision and training of registrars, house officers, and medical students, and play a key role in the continued development of our service as we grow into our new expanded space.

About the Team/Service/Location

Nelson Hospital’s ED provides 24/7 emergency care to a diverse patient population. It currently operates under increasing demand —the department sees 100–120 patients a day on its busiest days. This equates broadly to more than 33,000 presentations per annum, and likely more as the population grows.

Our ED team delivers comprehensive acute care, managing a wide range of medical, surgical, trauma, and paediatric emergencies. We work closely with inpatient teams, primary care providers, and retrieval services to ensure seamless patient care across the region.

You will become part of a strong team of FACEMs, emergency medicine medical officers and registrars, and Emergency nursing staff, supported by an excellent multidisciplinary team across the hospital. The team values a collegial and inclusive culture, strong inter-departmental relationships, and a commitment to continued quality improvement and excellent patient care.

The recently completed ED expansion offers a modern, purpose-built environment that improves patient experience and staff wellbeing. The redevelopment includes additional treatment and resuscitation areas, improved workflow design, and upgraded facilities to meet the growing needs of our community.

These two new Emergency Medicine Physician positions are integral to supporting this exciting phase of development and ensuring the delivery of high-quality emergency care in a modern, forward-looking department.
