Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Ngā mōhiohio e pā ana ki tēnei mahi (About this position)  

This is a permanent part-time position predominately based in Wairau Hospital with flexibility to work across the DHB region.  We have approximately 500 births per year in the Marlborough region.  There is an additional secondary unit in our sister hospital in Nelson and, together with the primary birthing units in Motueka, Golden Bay and a Health Centre in Murchison, they account for an further 1000 births.

We have excellent relationships with midwives both in the hospital and in primary care. Our paediatric colleagues will routinely care for neonates from 34 weeks gestation. We have established and supportive referral pathways to Wellington for Maternal Fetal Medicine, and to Christchurch for Gynaecological Oncology and for tertiary fertility treatments. 

You will be part of a departmental team of three O&G Specialists in Wairau and four in Nelson, and one RANZCOG Advanced O&G Trainee (i.e. Senior Registrar) in Nelson. 

The position involves providing high quality secondary level general Obstetrics and Gynaecology care to the women of the region. There is scope to develop a special interest area(s).  You will have excellent collegial support across the hospital from other services such as anaesthetics, general surgery, urology, radiology, pathology, etc.  The position also involves teaching medical, midwifery, and nursing trainees, and providing leadership across the service. 

Being a part-time position, there is scope for private practice in the area with Churchill Private Hospital being the provider of private surgery in Blenheim and operating on the Wairau Hospital site.

You will be an experienced and collegial Obstetrician and Gynaecologist keen to contribute to a busy, professional, and friendly team. 

Required Qualifications and Experience include:  

  • FRANZCOG or equivalent post graduate qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, or eligible for
  • Current Annual Practicing Certificate, or eligible for
  • C-QuiP certification for colposcopy, or eligible for

Salary for this position will be the range of $164,369 – $244,560 (pro rata) as per the current senior medical and dental officer collective agreement - dependent on skills, experience and gaining full vocational registration in NZ.
