The New Zealand Government has invested more than $600 million over four years in additional funding for new medicines, including new cancer treatments. This investment is supporting the expansion of oncology services, including additional oncology workforce funding, increased treatment capacity, and a new modern oncology facility at Nelson Hospital.

This is an exciting time to join our service as we continue to grow and develop our cancer services and improve access to high-quality care for patients across the Nelson Marlborough region. You will be joining the team at an important point in its development, with the opportunity to contribute to the future direction of oncology services in Nelson Malborough.

As a Medical Oncologist for Nelson Marlborough, you will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with cancer, while supporting patients and their whānau throughout their cancer journey.

Key responsibilities include:

• Provide high-quality, patient-centred medical oncology care;
• Contribute to the delivery of newly funded systemic anti-cancer treatments;
• Support quality improvement and service development; and
• Help shape innovative models of cancer care that improve access and bring treatment closer to patients and their whānau.

While the position may be based in either Nelson or Marlborough, we are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who would like to be based in Wairau Hospital, reflecting our commitment to strengthening oncology services across the region. However, we remain flexible and welcome applications from candidates wishing to be based at either site. The role includes travel between Nelson and Wairau Hospitals to provide specialist oncology services and support patients across the Nelson Marlborough region.

About the Team/Service/ Location

A growing oncology service

You will work alongside a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team including Medical Oncologists, Haematologists, Oncology Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Allied Health professionals, administration staff, and Health Care Assistants across Nelson and Wairau Hospitals.

Both hospitals have modern chemotherapy suites with a recently opened new facility in Nelson, bringing chemotherapy treatment and outpatient cancer clinics together in one dedicated location for the first time. The facility has been designed to support the growing demand for cancer services across Nelson Marlborough. We are also looking to develop community infusions.

The service also works closely with regional and tertiary centres, providing opportunities for professional collaboration, education and development. You will be joining a growing specialist workforce in a region where your contribution makes a meaningful impact on the delivery of cancer care closer to home.

About you

• Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine – Medical Oncology with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• Have experience with a broad range of cancers and systemic anti-cancer treatments.
• Be committed to providing patient-centred, evidence-based care, and supporting patients and their whānau throughout their cancer journey.
• Be comfortable working across the Nelson Marlborough region, with travel between Nelson and Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.
