About the Role
As a Consultant Inpatient Psychiatrist, you will play a key role in the assessment and management of patients, developing and implementing comprehensive treatment programmes that address psychological, social, and medication needs. You will also ensure effective follow-up and continuity of care within a regional secondary care service.
The position offers a varied and
rewarding caseload across a broad range of acute mental health conditions, with
opportunities to contribute to service development, multidisciplinary
collaboration, and clinical education.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Nelson Mental Health &
Addictions Service provides a comprehensive range of services across inpatient,
community, and specialist care. The inpatient unit offers acute care for adults
experiencing significant mental health challenges, with a focus on
recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice.
There are two fulltime consultant psychiatrists
each leading multi-disciplinary teams providing acute inpatient support. 25 bed
purpose built acute inpatient unit in Nelson serves the adult inpatient needs
for the district. The service is well-integrated with community teams and
primary care providers, ensuring continuity of care and strong regional support
networks.

About you
The ideal applicant will:
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Have experience working as a consultant in inpatient psychiatry Unit including managing voluntary and in-voluntary inpatients and providing treatment to individuals suffering from mental health and addictive disorders.
- Fit
into a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour,
and respect across disciplines.
