Consultant General Physician, Permanent


  • Based in Wairau Hospital, Blenheim
  • 1.0FTE (80 hours a fortnight) and 1:6 on-call & call back allowance

About the role

As a General Physician, you will:

  • Be passionate about general medicine.
  • Join and contribute to a high functioning team.
  • Participate in the general medicine acute roster with 4 hours average call-back a week.
  • Teach and develop our junior medical workforce.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of care across the health continuum working with a supportive multidisciplinary team.
  • Partner with primary and tertiary care providers to improve the health of the population in Marlborough region.

About the Team/Service/Location

Wairau Hospital is a modern, well-equipped secondary care facility serving the Marlborough region, approximately 45,000 people. Our general medicine service provides high-quality acute inpatient and outpatient care, supported by a strong multidisciplinary team. We maintain close links with Nelson Hospital and tertiary centres, ensuring excellent patient care and professional development opportunities.

You will be joining a small, supportive team of experienced physicians, including one from a Rural Hospital background, who are passionate about general medicine. Our team works closely with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and primary care providers to ensure an integrated approach to patient management, patient-centred care to the Marlborough region.

Local services include Emergency, Paediatrics, Specialist Health of Older Persons, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, O & G. Visiting services include Oncology, Haematology, Cardiology, Rheumatology and a number of other subspecialty teams. Diagnostic services include MRI, CT, Laboratory.

About you:

Skills and experience

The ideal applicant will:

  • Bring your general medical expertise and experience to an acute secondary care hospital and contribute to advanced care of the acute inpatients and outpatients in the region.
  • Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent.
  • Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine or for the right person, Rural Hospital Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Work with others to promote a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour, and respect across disciplines.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuing medical education and professional development.
  • Be competent with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Have experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
