Consultant General Physician, Permanent
- Based in Nelson
- 0.8FTE – 1.0FTE (64 - 80 hours a fortnight) and 1:8+ on-call & call back allowance

About the role
You’ll be part of a collegial and
supportive team of experienced physicians with diverse subspecialty interests,
including cardiology, respiratory medicine, nephrology, and gastroenterology. Our team
works closely with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and primary care
providers to ensure an integrated approach to patient care.
About the Team/Service/Location
Nelson Hospital is seeking a
dedicated and experienced Consultant General Physician to join our dynamic and
collaborative team. Our service provides a comprehensive range of general
medical care across acute and inpatient settings, supported by a well-resourced
multidisciplinary team. Nelson Hospital is a modern, 150-bed secondary care
facility that serves the top of the South Island, offering a vibrant working
environment with a focus on quality patient outcomes.
As a key member of our medical
services, you will provide high-quality, patient-centred care to the Nelson
region.
About you:
The successful candidate will:
- Practice varied and interesting medicine and work with a supportive multidisciplinary team.
- Deliver quality services to improve health of the population in Nelson.
- Participate in the general medicine acute roster with 4 hours average call-back a week.
- Teach and develop our growing junior medical workforce.
- Actively contribute to the critical design of our newly approved 225 clinical services block

Skills and experience
The ideal applicant will:
- Bring their general medical expertise and experience to an acute secondary care hospital and contribute to advanced care of the acute inpatients and outpatients in the region.
- Have preferred following subspecialty interests, however, all areas will be considered:
- Respiratory
- Rheumatology
- Stroke Medicine
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine/Rural Hospital Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Work with others to promote a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour, and respect across disciplines.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuing medical education and professional development.
- Be competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
- Have experience in projects / initiatives which
give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of
Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply
in healthcare settings.
