Clinical Nurse Specialist Emergency Department
- Clinical Nurse Specialist - Emergency Department Nelson Hospital
- 12 months Fixed Term, part time 0.7FTE (56 hours a fortnight, working rostered and rotating shifts Monday to Sunday)
- Emergency Medicine or Acute Care post-registration experience

About the Role
As the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Emergency Medicine, you will provide advanced clinical nursing expertise within the Emergency Department and support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. This role involves working collaboratively with nursing, medical and multidisciplinary teams to support clinical excellence, patient flow, education, and service improvement initiatives.
The CNS role is integral in supporting evidence-based practice, mentoring nursing staff, and contributing to positive patient outcomes in a fast-paced emergency care environment.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Nelson Hospital’s Emergency Department provides acute emergency care to the Nelson Marlborough community and surrounding regions. The department manages a broad range of presentations and works closely with inpatient services, community providers, and regional specialist teams.
Significant upgrades have now been completed in our Emergency Department following a major refurbishment designed to meet the needs of our growing community. The redevelopment has increased bed capacity to 29 and introduced modern features that enhance patient care and staff wellbeing, creating a more supportive and functional environment for patients, whānau, and staff.
You will be joining a dedicated and highly skilled Emergency Department team with a strong focus on patient-centred care, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
About you
You will bring a minimum of 5 years recent clinical experience along with validated advanced specialist knowledge and expertise in Emergency nursing care and education for patients and their whānau. You will have demonstrated experience and ability to apply specialist care, including advanced practice, diagnostics, and implementation of treatment protocols, together with the ability to apply best evidence-based practice within the Emergency Department setting.
You will also have:
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate
- Postgraduate Diploma qualification in Emergency Nursing obtained and working towards or completed a master's qualification
- Evidence of attainment of Expert or Senior Nurse Level PDRP (or working toward same)
- Demonstrated teaching, mentoring, and coaching skills within the clinical environment across the spectrum of care delivery
- Demonstrated ability to support clinical nursing staff at all levels of practice across the continuum of care
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- A collaborative approach and commitment to high-quality patient-centred care
