Clinical Nurse Specialist Cancer Nurse Coordinator Nelson

About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Oncology to provide advanced clinical leadership and expertise across the cancer care pathway.
This is a permanent part-time position suited to a senior clinician with oncology knowledge and experience, capable of confidently managing complex patient care and clinical situations. The CNS will play a pivotal role in supporting patients and whānau throughout their cancer journey, ensuring care is safe, timely, patient-centred, and evidence-based.
Working in close partnership with the multidisciplinary team, the CNS will provide expert clinical assessment, triage, and prioritisation to support optimal patient outcomes. The role requires a high level of clinical autonomy, with responsibility for supporting complex decision-making and contributing to the overall clinical leadership of the service.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, sound clinical judgement, and strong professional integrity. They will be a trusted senior clinician within the team, supporting others, influencing practice, and contributing to a positive, learning-focused clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advanced clinical care for patients with suspected or confirmed cancer, including complex cases
- Undertake comprehensive assessment, triage, prioritisation, and ongoing management
- Act as a key clinical resource for patients, whānau, and healthcare professionals
- Support equitable and timely access to cancer services and treatment
- Ensure clear and effective communication across all services and teams
- Contribute to multidisciplinary care and clinical decision-making
- Provide clinical leadership and support day-to-day practice within the service
- Deliver education, mentoring, and support to build team capability
- Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
This position is based in Nelson; however, travel between hospital sites across the Nelson Marlborough region will be required. The role works three 8-hour shifts per week, Monday to Sunday, on a rostered and rotating basis.

The Nelson Marlborough cancer service is committed to delivering compassionate, patient-focused care across the region. You will join a collaborative multidisciplinary team including oncology, haematology, palliative care, allied health, and community providers who work closely together to support patients throughout diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.

About you
We are looking for a highly skilled and compassionate nurse who is passionate about improving cancer care and patient outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Current New Zealand Annual Practising Certificate as a Registered Nurse
- Extensive post-registration nursing experience, ideally within oncology, haematology, or related specialist services
- Demonstrated clinical leadership and advanced assessment skills
- A strong commitment to patient-centred care and equity
- Excellent communication, coordination, and relationship-building abilities
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment
