About the role

The Older Persons’ Mental Health Admission Unit provides psychiatric and geriatric care for the older members of our community. We aspire to provide high quality inpatient care to patients with acute mental health needs and/or complex age related health conditions. We work in partnership with our patients, their families, the clinical team and community carers and supports to achieve the best possible health outcome for the patient.

As a Mental Health Assistant your role is to work with the team to provide basic nursing care under the supervision and direction of Registered Nurses. This can include working with challenging behaviours.

This is a casual position covering staff leave and periods of peak demand. It will therefore be important that you have the flexibility to cover a range of shifts (mornings, afternoons and nights) sometimes at short notice.  

About you

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, who has experience in older person’s health care and has an affinity with the elderly. It is equally important that you are able to work in a flexible and methodical manner, demonstrate honesty and reliability and use appropriate initiative.  



  • Home Carer Certificate (or equivalent)

Mandatory requirement

*NZQA Level 3: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing - Health Assistance Strand, if not previously obtainedis to be commenced once orientations have been attended.
