Consultant Geriatrician, Fixed term

About the role
Nelson Hospital is seeking a dedicated and experienced Geriatrician to join our multidisciplinary team on a fixed-term, up to 13-month parental leave cover from early February 2025. This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality care to older adults in one of New Zealand's most beautiful regions. You will play a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive healthcare for older adults through acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient services, and community-based programs. The position offers a rewarding mix of clinical practice, service development, and team collaboration.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Older Persons Health Service at Nelson Hospital delivers a patient-centred approach to care, providing acute inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and support for age-related health concerns. Our multidisciplinary team is committed to improving the quality of life for older adults by focusing on holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based care.
About you:
The successful candidate will:
- Delivering high-quality geriatric medical care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
- Join a supportive multidisciplinary team including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, and other medical specialities to provide assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Have the opportunity to engage with the wider clinical community and practice varied, challenging and rewarding geriatric medicine.
- Collaborating with primary care providers and other specialists to ensure continuity of care.
- Participating in service improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
- Providing mentorship and teaching to junior doctors and allied health staff.
Skills and experience
The preferred applicant will:
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Be passionate, patient and considerate when assessing and treating patients.
- Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
- Experience in projects / initiatives which
give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of
Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in
healthcare settings.
